The Aegis Trust is delighted that First Prize in Digital Media at the inaugural Global Media Peace Awards has gone to Richard Sergay for his short film which unpacks the development of peacebuilding in Rwanda through the story of Aegis CEO Freddy Mutanguha.
‘Forgiveness: A Pathway to Peace’ was made by Richard Sergay in collaboration with the Aegis Trust. Funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation and featured at the Listening & Leading conference in July, the film explores how peace is being achieved in Rwanda and what lessons this could hold for a wider international audience.
“A big thank you to the Global Peace Awards for this high honour, but most importantly to Freddy, who allowed us to tell his amazing story about the possibility of peace, reconciliation and forgiveness following the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda thirty years ago,” Richard Sergay commented in a video message for the awards ceremony, which was hosted by HEC Montréal and the Pale Blue Dot Foundation.
“Following our discussions, we as a jury were unanimous in our decision,” commented prize jury chair Manuela Kasper-Claridge, editor-in-chief of Germany’s state-owned broadcaster Deutsche Welle. “It was really a pleasure to be involved because we journalists currently spend so much of our time reporting on conflict, war and death, and it was refreshing to dedicate time watching and listening to stories explicitly dedicated to conflict resolution and peace.”
