Established by the Aegis Trust at the invitation of the Rwandan authorities, and opened in 2004 on the tenth anniversary of the start of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, the Kigali Genocide Memorial stands alongside mass graves which form the final resting-place for some 250,000 of the million people who were murdered in just 100 days. A site of remembrance and learning for Rwandans and internationals alike, the Memorial includes three permanent exhibitions set in landscaped memorial gardens. Its new classrooms and open-air amphitheatre, completed in April 2014, are just the first phase of a much larger planned site expansion. The Memorial is also home to the Genocide Archive of Rwanda. It is open seven days a week, excluding public holidays.
