Over a thousand demonstrators gathered on Sunday 16 September outside the Sudanese Embassy before marching on Downing Street as part of a global day of action for Darfur. They were there to warn that a recent Security Council resolution has left some in the international community complacent when in fact violence on the ground is increasing. Campaigners donned blindfolds in a call to world leaders, ‘Protect Darfur: don’t look away.’
Lord Malloch Brown emphasized the importance of demonstrations to the process of securing peace for Darfur. “While it seems difficult to come out on these demonstrations, it’s really important that you do it. And I say that not just as a British Foreign Office minister, but as someone who was previously Kofi Annan’s deputy. All our efforts on Darfur needed public support… so please, never lose faith in the importance of what you’re doing. These demonstrations really matter.”
