Minutes of Inaugural Meeting 19 July 2017. 11.00
Alison McGovern MP (Labour) and Tom Tugendhat MP (Conservative) and Robert Jenrick MP (Conservative) continue to serve as Co-Chairs of the APPG.
The Group name was amended to “APPG on Prevention of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity”. Current aims of the group were confirmed, as well as its thematic focus on bringing expertise, case studies, best practices and evidence based research on atrocity prevention to parliament.
A series of events starting in September was discussed, with the first event entitled “Global Britain: UK’s Role in Atrocity Prevention Post Brexit” to take place in September 2017, with Alison McGovern MP (Labour) and Tom Tugendhat co-chairing a panel including Cameron Hudson, Director of the Genocide Prevention Centre at USHMM (Washington), and Sarah Brockmeier from Global Policy Institute in Berlin.
There was continued interest in following up the event held in February 2016 with Nadia Murad about the current situation for the Yazidi community in Iraq, and possibility of combining this with a thematic focus such as rehabilitation in the UK or expert analysis of a specific issues such as safe zones.
