12 Oct 06 – The Aegis Trust welcomes the bill passed today by the French National Assembly, making it a crime to deny that mass killings of Armenians in Turkey during and after World War I amounted to genocide. Dr James Smith, Chief Executive of the Aegis Trust, stated:
“It’s fundamental that Turkey should recognise the Armenian Genocide before joining the EU. Human rights is supposed to be the foundation of the EU. We can’t have a member state destroying 1.5 million of its own citizens and pretending that’s OK. We wouldn’t accept Germany denying the Holocaust; we shouldn’t accept Turkey denying the Armenian Genocide. France may be hurt economically if this bill becomes law, but their MPs have shown leadership. It’s time the British Government placed morals above politics too, and stop denying the Armenian Genocide.”
