The Aegis Trust has joined colleagues and partners around the World in marking International Peace Day 2022 – the theme for which is ‘End Racism. Build Peace.’ In the words of the UN Secretary General; “Racism continues to poison institutions, social structures, and the everyday life in every society. It continues to be a driver of persistent inequality.”
Throughout history, racial discrimination has led to unprecedented violence, injustice, mass atrocities and genocide. The Aegis Trust works to prevent genocide and help individuals and communities to recover from its wounds and scars in the aftermath. This serves to build sustainable peace and counter the recurrence of such horrors.
“On International Peace Day 2022 we recommit ourselves at the Aegis Trust and Kigali Genocide Memorial to ending racism and building peace,” says Freddy Mutanguha, Aegis’ Executive Director. “Through daily dedication to this task, shared with friends and partners around the World, it’s more than a dream. It’s achievable.”
“Peace is an essential factor for human life. Lack of peace affects people’s lives. Let’s all stand for peace, make it a culture, be responsible for offering, teaching, spreading and achieving it wherever we are,” says Lydie Mutesi, a member of the guides team at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. “Happy International Peace Day.”
The final resting-place for 250,000 victims of the genocide, in which a million people were killed in just 100 days, the Kigali Genocide Memorial is the result of collaboration between Rwandan authorities and the Aegis Trust, born from the UK National Holocaust Centre.
