On 20 November, H.E. Salvador Antonio Valdés Mesa, the Vice President of Cuba visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial and honoured the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Vice President Salvador began his visit by laying a wreath at the mass graves, holding a moment of silence at the final resting place of a quarter million victims.
Accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr Vincent Biruta, H.E. Salvador and his delegation were led through the different exhibitions in the memorial which depict the history of Rwanda, the planning and implementation of the Genocide against the Tutsi as well as its bitter repercussions.
The delegation also had the opportunity to learn about the Memorial’s role in efforts to rebuild and reconcile after the Genocide. Reaffirming this, H.E. Salvador wrote in the memorial guestbook at the end of his visit; “The Kigali Genocide Memorial must be a place for reflection, healing and reconciliation, not only for Rwandan people but for all human beings.”
