How does the experience of genocide during a pregnancy – especially one resulting from genocidal rape – affect the future physical and mental health of the child? Join Dr Glorieuse Uwizeye (Dartmouth College) on Tuesday June 8th to find out: https://www.soas.ac.uk/ccrj/events/08jun2021-youth-physical-and-mental-health-after-genocidal-rape-during-the-1994-genocide-against-the.html
In a talk co-hosted by the Centre on Conflict, Rights and Justice (CCRJ) and the Aegis Trust’s Program in Research, Policy and Higher Education, Dr Uwizeye will examine the findings of a survey in which 91 Rwandans – 30 conceived by genocidal rape, 31 born of genocide survivors not raped, and a control group of 30 born of women with neither exposure – completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire and measures of multiple physical and mental health characteristics.
A Research Fellow in Anthropology at Dartmouth College and a mental health nurse studying the intersecting impacts of political, socioeconomic, and environmental factors on development and adult health, Dr Uwizeye has been awarded research grants by the Aegis Trust as co-investigator of ‘Remembering the humanity’ and principal investigator of ‘Lived experience of children born of genocidal sexual violence’. Currently she is collaborating on ‘Research-led Peace Education as Crisis Prevention in Central Africa’, funded by the British Academy.
“Both as a health practitioner and an academic, Glorieuse Uwizeye has spent years examining the lives of children born of rape during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi,” says Phil Clark, Professor of International Politics at SOAS University of London. “With incredible sensitivity and sophistication, she dissects the complex challenges these young Rwandans have confronted since the genocide. Crucially, though, Glorieuse’s research also highlights the ways in which children born of rape have rebuilt their lives and started coming to terms with their traumatic past.”
Dr Uwizeye’s talk will start 5.00pm UK time on Tuesday June 8th. Click the link below to book your seat free of charge now:
